Yankee Pole Cat's Golden Pond
By Doug MacGillvary

Reprinted from "Crown Jewels of the Wire", April 2007, page 42

September 16th: Today we gathered at Emmon's Golden Pond in East Hampton, CT like we have been doing for years. The weatherman tried to scare us into thinking we would see clouds and scattered showers but believe it or not he was wrong. The sun was out from start to finish. Start was about 7:15 am when club president John Rajpolt and myself arrived at the end of sleepy old Long Crossing Road. For the next hour or so cars and trucks arrived, boxes of insulators were unwrapped; those cable spools were set up as tables and the action started.

Ed Brown

I think I counted 18 different people set up along both sides of the drive, which runs along one side of the pond. The buying, selling and trading was really brisk. I know, everybody that does a write-up always says that the action was brisk, but this is no BS. Man, I made more trades today than the Red Sox did at the trading deadline! The morning flew by and when the smell of the burgers on the grill filtered down from the gazebo, chief chef Larry Emmons announced that lunch was ready. It appeared that the gang was particularly hungry today. When the dust settled there were four hamburg rolls left and maybe the salt and pepper shaker!

Jeff Katchko

I think we fed between forty to fifty people, everyone acting like they hadn't eaten in a month! Usually after lunch the party tends to breakup. Not today. It was back to the cable spools and tables and more wheeling and dealing. It wasn't until after three that the party started to breakup. Besides all the regular Pole Cats we were pleased to see Jeff Katchko and Ken Willick make the trip. We were really happy to see Carol and Al Fix who came all the way from the Buffalo area of NY. I know that they were very happy with their sales, purchases and trades. It's a long ride, but we're hoping they will be coming back to visit us again. So if you read this and you were just an hour or two away, you missed a great day. Don't screw up again. Come next time!! Our thanks also go to Mary Jo and Larry Emmons for providing us their location ONCE AGAIN for our fall swap.
