Displaying Outside the Box
Reprinted from "Crown Jewels of the Wire", August 2005, page 24
Some collectors display their insulators in a lighted cabinet,
Others place them on shelves or window ledges.
Not collector Jim Decker of Tracy, California.
Jim displays his insulators on poles in the yard.
As much as possible he mounts the insulators
on original hardware in the fashion
each type of insulator was placed into service.
Collecting this way takes a bit of research,
and a fair sized yard.
The poles, though,
are only about half their original height.
While the wires on the power lines are not electrified,
Jim does have an operating telephone circuit
connected to original switching equipment.
DECKED OUT

Want to see what insulators looked like
when in service on a pole?
Jim Decker's method of collecting
brings back memories
of when good glass and porcelain
could still be seen
"in the air".
