Insulators of the Lake Superior Basin
Larry Furo, Duluth, Minnesota
Showmanship Award presented by Bob & Phoebe Adams

SUPERIOR - DULUTH - TWO HARBORS - GRAND MARIAIS - THUNDER BAY - NIPIGON - MARATHON - WAWA - SAULT-STE. MARIE - MUNISUNG - NEGAUNEE - MARQUETTE - L' ANSE - COPPER HARBOR - LAURIUM - HOUGHTON - HANCOCK - ONTONAGON - MADELINE ISLAND - BAYFIELD - ASHLAND - PORT WING - ISLE ROYALE. Sounds like a travelog, and it is for many of the insulators in my collection are from these Superior Basin towns.

Larry says: I began collecting in 1968 and have a general collection. A fellow by the name of Bruce Sundberg was my mentor. He kept encouraging me with, "Let's go. Larry!"

The CD H G. CO. smooth base signal in sun-colored amethyst is my favorite in the display. While I was replacing it on a two pin fire alarm circuit, an exterior fire alarm went off half a block away. I would love to find a new CD or variation in my "Lake Superior" area.

CD 162 H.G.Co. smooth base in purple found in Calumet, MI. CD 151 H. G. Co. NATCO. with no drips on the inner skirt found on the BM-IR Line between Duluth and Two Harbors. CD 126 Un embossed Pennycuick patent threading along J. Cook Park, St. Louis River.

CD 145 Dome embossed Brookfield in purple with single patent date on rear dome from the Northern Pacific into Duluth along a short line between NP and Duluth. CD 251 N.E.G. M. Co. found in Two Harbors in a nice dark yellow green. CD 125 PAT APP FOR on the Northern Pacific out of Duluth.

CD 144 Dated on dome Foree Bain patent found at 21st Ave and W. Niagara in Duluth. CD 102 Westinghouse was found at St. Maris Country Road, Bay Missuse. CD 160.7 base embossed American in root beer amber was located on the carriage house of an old mansion in Duluth.

A fishnet encircled the map of Lake Superior with some other items that had been recovered from the basin by Larry. Also included were a U-926 Locke with four dates, a CD 134.4 unembossed Pennycuick patent, CD 134 T-HE on the dome; a CD 121.4 A.U., CD 106 Birmingham, a CD 151 embossed "7", CD 154 Dominion in root beer amber; CD 162 H.G.Co. with sharp drip points in peacock blue; CD 133.2 lite green unembossed bullet with Canadian origins, CD 258 embossed CABLE,; a white porcelain Canadian beehive stamp-marked in green with A.E.R.; a CD 133.3 embossed with a single bar on the front and read (K.C.G.W. manufacture); a CD 196 H.G.Co. transposition; a CD 143 Canadian Pacific in royal purple; a U-935A Imperial; a CD 120.2 embossed PONY. What a diverse general collection Larry has amassed from his travels as a lineman around the Lake Superior basin.
