13th Annual National Insulator Association Convention
by Pat Whitlock

Reprinted from "INSULATORS - Crown Jewels of the Wire", October 1982, page 4

The 13th Annual National Insulator Association Convention was held July 15-18 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, despite the hard rain, strong wind and flooding.

For the 70 dealers and 30 exhibitors it was like a big family reunion. For me there were several familiar faces and many new ones whom I was very glad to meet and get to know better.

There was much trading and selling during the four day event. The two days the show was open to the public brought a good crowd through the door. There were approximately 100 members in attendance at the Friday night NIA meeting. The meeting went smoothly, and the show and tell (or question and answer) period which followed was a great success.

Collectors at Saturday's banquet numbered 155. The #42 awards given by Jerry Turner had a slight twist at the end. Not only did Jerry receive a toy Greyhound bus with play money trailing behind, but he also received a gorgeous electric lamp made from 42's.

All 'n all, from a first timer's point of view, the event went quite well, but the time passed all too quickly.

Larry and I would like to thank all of you, whether dealer, exhibitor, or spectator, for participating and making the show the fun and success that it was.

Following are pictures of various displays, sales tables, awards and trophies, etc. Sorry three displays aren't pictured: Carol McDougald's Threaded Glass -- Twigs Patent, 1st place (She also received the George C. Scott Probe award.); Fred Wittstock's Porcelain -- White Delight, 3rd place; and Ora and Joanne Beary's General -- Shapes of the Past, 2nd place. Also missing are pictures of awards presented at the banquet: Marilyn Albers -- Showmanship, presented by Bob and Phoebe Adams; John and Carol McDougald -- Outstanding Service; Pat Patocka -- Past President's plaque, presented by Len Linscott.
