The Canadian Pacific Thin-Pin
by Mark Lauckner
Reprinted from "Crown Jewels of the Wire", November 1993, page 13
As you can see from the photo below, there are two Canadian CD 143's with the
raised band or "slug" plate, embossed CANADIAN PACIFIC RY. Upon closer
examination one can see the insulator on the left has a smaller pinhole. The
actual pin this insulator was on is pictured on the following page beside a
regular pin for comparison. Note the difference in diameter as well as taper.
Both the insulator and pin came from the same Canadian Pacific rail line in
Alberta.
As soon as I got back from Alberta, I examined my 20+ raised band CD
143' s and found there to be quite a lot of variations of pinhole diameters
specific to this mold style.
Is it possible that a small number of thin pins
were shipped with these insulators resulting from the recognition that they do
not thread very far onto a standard pin? I used to spot raised band CD 143's
from a distance because they generally sat up higher on the crossarms...those
which were fitted onto standard pins...
MATERIAL NEED FOR UPCOMING REPORT ON THE CD 143
I am currently preparing an extensive document on the CD 143. Is there anyone
out there with a double-threaded pin?
I also need full size photos of the three
CD 743' s and close-ups of their bases. This book will also contain a color page
if anyone has a spectacular specimen that would like to be pictured.
