On a trip to Europe last summer I was fortunate enough to pick up 4 of these unusual French insulators. These are undoubtedly the most unusual I've ever seen. The ones I found range in color from light to deep, almost black green. These were found near Nevers, France. I've seen only one other insulator like these, at a trade meet in New York. Europe is unquestionably much more beautiful than the United States. (Insulatorwise, of course. ) It is a gold mine for any collector, glass or ceramic. Insulators come in SCA, green, blue and all colors that can be found in the U. S.. Ceramics come in almost every color of the rainbow. There are many huge power insulators, especially in deep olive and aqua. The shapes are impossible to explain. Many of the insulators are even more weird than the one I have shown.

Getting the insulators is a different story. I was just lucky. We just happened to be passing a line that was being re-strung. Next to each new pole was a discarded old one. But we were even luckier. The metal pole the insulator was fastened to was unscrewed from the crossarm. Of course that was just by chance. The insulators are securely fastened to a metal pole with plaster of paris, making the insulators unobtainable from the ground. Second, no one has even heard of insulators over there. Your only chance to get insulators in Europe is to FIND THEM YOURSELF.

It seems as if there are the same number of ceramics as glass insulators in Europe. Germany, Austria, and Italy have a number of ceramics, while France and the Low Countries are primarily glass. From what I hear, England is almost entirely ceramics.
