WHEN SPARKS FLY
Reprinted from "Crown Jewels of the Wire", September 2006, page 38
This picture is not what you think. It is NOT a pole with cross arms. That is
NOT a kite. It's really a sculpture on display in Philadelphia.
Rod Phillips reports that Philly this summer has been celebrating Benjamin
Franklin's 300th birthday, and commemorating his famous experiment involving a
key, a kite and a bolt of lightning. The "kite" in this exhibit is
made out of metal screen. While the insulators are real, Rod says the entire
sculpture is just 7-feet high.
"Kites: Art Takes Flight" is an exhibition of 40 kite inspired
sculptures honoring Ben Franklin. This particular exhibit is entitled,
"When Sparks Fly", and was created by Janet Fitch & Scott Thorne.
So... for all of you who create back yards displays of poles, crossarms and
insulators... you can now officially consider yourselves artists! We knew it all
along.
