We're Just Curious....

In the April, 1969 issue of Old Bottle Magazine, insulator editor Frances
Terrill wrote about a newly discovered California CD 201 that was different than
the rest.
Frances wrote that two collectors in California were "poking around on
an old line looking for 1 piece Brookfields when they noticed an insulator that
appeared to be a little slimmer than average CD 201 or Hem. 2. It turned out to
be a new purple Calif. which we had not heard of before."
A purple CD 201 California? Such a find is still not listed in the Price
Guide today! .
Can anyone verify the existence of a purple CD 201 California? If so, let us
know at Crown Jewels. We've got a major dose of curiosity that needs to be
satisfied.
Speaking of curious things. Your editors were surprised when Colin Jung
pointed out to us that the two CD 201's shown in the May issue of Crown Jewels
were the same insulator. California 201's are listed in blue aqua and green
aqua colors. We showed both colors. But Colin is right. It turns out to be the
same insulator.
We took one picture of the insulator ourselves; and another collector sent us
a picture of the same insulator that he took. My only explanation is that a
difference in lighting and camera settings made the color come out to appear as
if there were two different insulators. We did not intentionally changed the
color of the same insulator. Neither did we notice both pictures were of the
same insulator. But, as Colin also pointed out, there were one or two other
California insulators in the May issue that appear to be the same insulator but
shown in different shades of color. Again, different sources for the pictures
(and different cameras) but the same insulator. We'll try to be more careful in
the future.
What are your curious about? Do you have an insulator question that someone
else in the hobby might be able to answer? Write Crown Jewels and/ or send us a
picture, and we'll see if any of our subscribers has the answer. If it is a
question about CD designs, we'll forward it to N.R. Woodward.
