That's what Tee King asked. She I searched the internet to find out what a Chauffeuse was. Tee says the only info she got was from a May 1998 Porcelain Insulator News article in Crown Jewels.
A Chauffeuse of a much more simple design was shown in that article. It had been found with copper wires strung through the holes.
Elton Gish believes these are decorative pottery guide plates through which wires passed as they went into buildings (and into wall tubes). The Chauffeuse shown in the 1998 article was
rectangular in shape. Elton asked if anyone else had any of these at that time, but received no response. How about now? Does any reader own a Chauffeuse, or know anything about them? At eight inches in diameter, this attractive object may well be an insulator go-with.
Tee says she picked this one up for a buck at a thrift store.
